 MAGIC by Artist La'Vata E O'Neal

MAGIC by Artist La'Vata E O'Neal

I go by LeoNeal as an artist but my real name is La`Vata E. O'Neal and I do fantasy and concept illustrations for a living as a freelance artist. I was born in the US and at a young age I worked with your typical children’s markers, crayons and pencils. For a long time though I only used pencils to draw images I saw out of magazines, only dabbling in paint and charcoal here and there. After I moved to Georgia in 2008 with my father, having been laid off at my old job, I got connected with artist communities online which inspired me to dig deeper into the artist well. Which reigniting my passion for art. Ideas about a real career in art were brought to my attention through that community.

As a self taught artist I practiced every day and search for information online to help me understand the aspects of art that I didn't quite grasp back then and still do so today. I learned so much over the years. A lot of it was purging, self discovery, and a maturing mind that took place.

In 09' that I earned my first tablet doing a commission, having only worked with a mouse digitally before that. It was the greatest "gift" I could have ever been given even though the tablet was traded in exchange for work.

I earned my first contractor job in September of 2013 with Voltage Entertainment. This was great experience for me but I still really want to learn more. I want to create illustrations of other people’s stories, characters and strange worlds and really learn how to bring them to life!

ONYXCON: Sankofa 2015

ONYXCON's SANKOFA show is back for 2015 at a brand new gem in Atlanta! Prepare to witness the beauty and decadence of the WOLF CREEK library! Proudly located off Enon Road, neighboring the massive Wolf Creek Outdoor Amphitheater, this high tech library is a state of the art new facility for building knowledge and developing minds in an ever growing community.

SANKOFA is a phrase and one of the many Adinkra symbols of Ghana (W. Africa). The phrase that is translated as ' GO BACK AND FETCH IT ' is a call to order for knowing one's past/history so that you may move forward into your future with the confidence and strength of knowing your roots/who you are. At ONYXCON we take pride in making the history and future of the African Diaspora's impact, contributions, and presence in popular Arts a priority.

We will have fun games and activities in addition to the marketplace of vendors from local and afar showcasing the future of cultural/ethnic diversity in comics, gaming, film, toys, fashion, music, and more - always with that unique fantastic, surreal, action/adventure, whimsical, fun way that only ONYXCON can manifest like no other place in the cosmos.
